So, the long arm of Diego Fuentes reached even as far as Phoenix. Moody undid his gunbelt and hung it within easy reach by the bed. “This ought to be interesting,” he said to himself. “Most interesting.”

Moody suspected that a showdown with Fuentes would involve half dozen of his men, too. It would be his last fight if he were outnumbered by more than three to one. Well, he mused, he could handle three, but probably not four. Jake had bragged of handling four men on one occasion, though. Moody suspected it was true. If not, it was a great story.

He lit the lantern, took off his boots, and lay back on the bed. His only regret was not getting the damn governor before leaving for Mexico since he didn’t expect to survive the trip now that Fuentes was coming after him. “I’ve been damn careless if a Mexican bandit can track me down,” Moody muttered. “Wonder when he got on to me.” He realized it didn’t matter. Maybe it would save him from having to travel all the way to Guerrero Negro. That’d be right nice.

As for Governor Myers, Moody really had nothing on the man, but he intuitively knew that Myers was crooked as hell. What was it about gold that got into a man’s head and heart? Moody himself had never had an interest in the gold ore, other than spending it. Chasing it down looked like too damn much work. People became compulsive in their quest for gold. The lure of it became an addiction.

A soft knock on the door brought him out of his reverie. “Who is it?” he called.

“It’s Mattie,” a soft voice answered.

Moody opened to door to find a small brunette standing in the doorway, face powdered, cheeks rouged, lips red and gown revealing. “Come in,” he said, admiring the young woman’s sashay as she entered the room. “No talk,” he said as he began unbuttoning his shirt.

“Well, I see you’re a man who knows what he wants,” Mattie purred. “It’s two dollars extra if I spend the night.”

Moody slapped a silver eagle on the table. “It’s all yours, Mattie. More if you just shut up.”
